Muar Top Places to Visit: A Weekend Getaway Guide

Muar top places to visit might not be readily available and it was my first time travelling to Muar. I chose to explore this charming town over a short 3 days, 2 nights weekend getaway. When people hear the name Muar, the first thing that often comes to mind is otak-otak. Otherwise, Muar is usually seen as a quick pit stop for travelers heading from Singapore to Malacca or Kuala Lumpur.

While Muar may not enjoy the same level of fame as Malacca, this riverside town surprised me with its laid-back charm, rich heritage, and vibrant food scene. After spending a weekend here, I’ve compiled a list of Muar top places to visit. It would be perfect for first-time visitors looking to experience the town beyond its famous otak-otak.

1. Muar Clock Tower & Sultan Ismail Bridge

An icon of the town, Muar Clock Tower stands proudly as a historical landmark and a great starting point for exploring the town. Just nearby is the Sultan Ismail Bridge, offering scenic views of the Muar River—especially beautiful at night.

2. Tanjung Emas Muar & Waterfront

This riverside park is ideal for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing break. The Tanjung Emas Waterfront is well-maintained, family-friendly, and comes alive in the evening with locals enjoying the cool breeze and river views.

3. Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque

One of the oldest mosques in Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque is an architectural gem. Its elegant design and peaceful atmosphere make it a meaningful stop, whether you’re admiring it from outside or visiting during permitted hours.

4. Muar River Cruise

To see the town from a different perspective, hop on the Muar River Cruise. The short cruise offers a relaxing way to appreciate the town’s riverside scenery while learning more about Muar’s history.

5. Nan Hai Fei Lai Temple

The Nan Hai Fei Lai Temple is a Chinese style Buddhist temple just opposite the bus terminal in Muar. The entrance to the temple is mundane looking and very plain apart from its ornate roof. The temple is dedicated to Guan Yin and the overall look is quite standard.

6. Muar Cultural Walk and Mural Lane

Art lovers will enjoy exploring Muar Cultural Walk, where colourful murals tell stories of the town’s heritage and daily life. It is a great place for photos and a slow wander through Muar’s creative side.

7. Otak-otak

No trip to Muar is complete without trying its most famous delicacy. Fresh, fragrant, and generously filled, Muar otak-otak lives up to its reputation. The 2 brands I have bought from were Daily Happy Otak Otak and Xiao Mei Famous Muar Otak-Otak.

8. Otak Otak 2-Storey House by Daily Happy Otak Otak

This iconic two-storey lane is a must-visit for travelers. Besides the tasty otak-otak produced in house, made from fresh eel meat, it is also a photo spot. I have a great time taking photos around the historic looking area.

9. Muar Glutton Street

As the name suggests, Muar Glutton Street is a paradise for street food enthusiasts. From local favorites to classic Malaysian dishes, this area is perfect for your food hunt.

10. Kopi 434 Muar

A heritage coffee shop/ cafe that reflects Muar’s kopitiam culture, Kopi 434 is a great place to enjoy a cup of traditional coffee and simple local fare. Many souvenirs such as various packet coffee, tea and snacks could be purchase here.

11. Hunt for Durians

Last but not least, if you are visiting during durian season, you are in for a treat. Roadside stalls and small farms around Muar offer fresh durians at reasonable prices—a fun experience for durian lovers.
