Sun World Hon Thom: Aquatopia Water Park & Cable Car Ride

Sun World Hon Thom was basically my first stop the following morning after a good night’s sleep over at The Empire Hotel. After breakfast, my friend and I hailed a Grab towards the southern part of Phu Quoc island. It was from the Hon Thom Departure Terminal where we would embark on one of the island’s biggest attractions — the Guinness World Record holder for the longest sea-crossing cable car ride.

Since we set out pretty early in the morning, there was barely much crowd when we arrived. The terminal itself was surprisingly beautiful, with many Instagram-worthy spots and Mediterranean-inspired architecture. It made the place feel more like a resort than a transportation center. We wasted no time and headed straight into the terminal for our cable car ride.

Thankfully, there was no need to queue since we had already purchased our tickets online beforehand. We simply scanned through the gantry and were assigned to a spacious cabin that could probably fit more than 15 passengers comfortably. The cable car ride lasted roughly about 15 to 20 minutes, and honestly, it was already an attraction on its own. Watching the turquoise waters, fishing villages, and smaller islands from high above was an unforgettable experience. The panoramic sea view throughout the journey made the ride feel incredibly scenic and relaxing too!

Aquatopia Water Park Experience

After arriving on Hon Thom Island, there was actually quite a list of activities available. However, our main priority for the day was none other than Aquatopia Water Park.

Timing worked out perfectly as we arrived around 10 minutes before the rental counter opened. We quickly changed into our swimwear, applied plenty of sunscreen, and rented a locker to store our belongings. We were so excited as we rushed off towards our first water slide adventure.

The first two slides we attempted turned out to be the most extreme rides in the entire park. We had to stand inside a vertical capsule while waiting nervously for the countdown. Once the timer hit zero, the floor beneath suddenly opened up, sending us plunging almost straight down at high speed. The adrenaline rush was insane, and I could literally feel my heart skip a beat during the drop.

One thing to note though — the weather in Phu Quoc can get brutally hot around noon. Walking barefoot between rides became quite a burden at times. We had to constantly retrieve our slippers from different holding shelves after each water slides.

We spent the rest of the morning exploring almost every slide in the park to make our admission ticket worthwhile. Some of the more memorable attractions included the multi-lane racer slides where groups could compete side-by-side, giant enclosed tube slides with sharp twists and turns, and raft rides that sent us spinning unpredictably through massive funnels. There were also family-friendly slides and splash zones suitable for children, making the water park fairly enjoyable for all age groups.

Thankfully, because we arrived early, queue times were still relatively short during the morning hours. We managed to cover most attractions without wasting too much time waiting under the scorching sun.

To slow things down towards the end of our water park session, we grabbed a tube and drifted along the Lost Lagoon Lazy River. The lazy river slowly winds around the entire park, passing through shaded sections, making it one of the most relaxing attractions after all the thrilling rides earlier on.

Sun World Hon Thom Theme Park Rides & Island Development

By afternoon, the crowds started pouring in and queue times became noticeably longer at several attractions. By then, I was already at least a shade darker from the intense sun exposure. We eventually decided to wash up before heading over to the dry rides section of the park.

To be honest, there are not many dry rides available compared to the water attractions. Besides a roller coaster and a few smaller rides, the standout attraction for me was definitely the revolving observation tower. The ride slowly ascends high above the island and offers panoramic views across the entire Sun World Hon Thom area.

From the top, we could clearly see that Hon Thom Island is still undergoing major development. Construction projects and expanding infrastructure were visible from afar, suggesting that the island may eventually transform into a much bigger tourism destination in the future. With more beach resorts and attractions potentially opening over time, Hon Thom could easily become one of Vietnam’s premier island getaway spots.

Sun World Hon Thom Dining Options

Food and beverage options around the island were actually more plentiful than I initially expected. There were several eateries, snack kiosks, and cafes located around both the water park and cable car terminal areas.

Visitors can find local Vietnamese dishes, international dishes and refreshing drinks such as Vietnamese beer, bubble tea, and fresh coconut water. Since the weather was extremely hot throughout the day, cold drinks quickly became a necessity rather than a luxury.

We purchased the standard admission ticket for our visit, but there are also combo packages available that include the Sun World Hon Thom Buffet. For visitors planning to spend the entire day on the island, the buffet combo might actually offer better value and convenience.

Overall Experience

Overall, my experience at Sun World Hon Thom turned out to be an enjoyable and memorable one. The cable car ride alone was already worth experiencing at least once for its breathtaking sea views. Aquatopia Water Park was definitely the highlight of the day, especially with its wide variety of thrilling water slides.

Although the afternoon crowd and scorching weather could get slightly exhausting, arriving early in the morning made a huge difference. It allowed us to enjoy most rides with minimal waiting time. While the dry ride section still feels somewhat limited for now, the island clearly has ambitious development plans that could make it even more exciting in the years ahead.

As the evening approached, we finally made our way back towards the cable car station for our return journey. Watching the beautiful sea and surrounding islands once again during sunset hours provided a relaxing end to an action-packed day. For anyone visiting Phu Quoc, especially thrill seekers or families looking for a fun-filled island adventure, Sun World Hon Thom is definitely worth the visit.
