Canada Hills Miri: Petroleum Museum and The Grand Old Lady

Canada Hills Miri is easily one of Miri’s popular attractions, and it is not hard to see why. Although the hill itself isn’t particularly high, it rewards visitors with a panoramic view of the town below. The view also stretches all the way to the coastline and the open sea. It is a simple but satisfying pitstop if you enjoy scenic lookouts paired with a bit of local history.

After checking into our hotel at the Pullman Miri Waterfront, we took a Grab and headed over to Canada Hills. The ride took less than 15 minutes thanks to the smooth afternoon traffic that day. It was a convenient stop even if you have a tight itinerary.

One of the first things that caught my eye is the Hollywood-style “MIRI” sign, a fun photo spot for everyone. Just beside the huge sign, two iconic landmarks sit side by side. The Grand Old Lady, Malaysia’s first-ever oil well, and the Petroleum Museum.

The Grand Old Lady stands as a proud reminder of Miri’s roots as the birthplace of the nation’s petroleum industry. Nothing fancy, but a tall historical structure that you could take a photo with. Right next to it would be the Petroleum Museum that offers a look into how oil shaped Miri’s development. From the early days of manual drilling to the modern offshore operations that keep the industry running today. The exhibits might not be that engaging but is an educational stop for visitors of all ages. Best of all, it is free entry for all.

In conclusion, Canada Hills Miri delivers a calm, memorable experience whether you’re here for the views, the history, or simply to tick off one of Miri’s must-visit spots. It is an ideal start to exploring the city—and well worth the quick ride from the Pullman. It would be a bonus if you can reach in time to catch the sunrise or sunset too!
