Lao Chai Village and Ta Van Village, nestled side by side in the heart of Northern Vietnam’s rugged mountains, offer a glimpse into a serene and traditional way of life. Both villages are just a short drive from Sapa, which we conveniently reached using Grab. I was thrilled to explore its world of terraced rice fields, traditional rural houses, and the way of life deeply connected to nature. The experience was different from visiting Cat Cat Village the day before.
Our journey to Lao Chai Village began along winding roads that meandered through foggy valleys. The landscape unfolded like a tapestry of rice paddies etched into the mountainside. Unfortunately, the harvest season had just ended, so we missed the chance to witness it in its full glory.

We disembarked along the valley and followed a dirt path that led us down to the villages. Walking through the village felt like stepping back in time. The dirt paths meandered past homes and a few small shops selling daily necessities to the local residents. H’mong women, dressed in their traditional attire, strolled the streets, selling their beautifully embroidered handicrafts to visitors. We saw young children running out of their school gates and lingering around the entrance. Chickens and ducks roamed freely around the muddy fields, searching for food beneath the soil.
Lao Chai Village was small, allowing us to leisurely stroll from one end to the other. Its exit led to Ta Van Village, which shared a similar rustic charm.

Ta Van Village – Sa Mộc Restaurant & Cafe Bar
Sa Mộc Restaurant & Cafe Bar caught our attention on Google Maps while we were searching for a lunch spot. We took a slight detour and climbed upslope for about 10 minutes to reach our destination. I was excited to spot the rustic restaurant-cafe, with seating offering stunning views of the terraced paddy fields!
We decided to order the Dzay Set, which included Local Spices Braised Pork Belly, Grilled Fish, Stir-Fried Smoked Pork and Vegetables, Soup, and Rice. Although there were à la carte options available, the set seemed more appealing, especially since we were quite hungry. We also ordered egg coffee to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views.
Although there were stray dogs wandering around the area, they didn’t bother us. The only thing that disrupted our meal was a bee hovering around our food. Dining outdoors in temperatures between 10–15 degrees meant the food cooled quickly. Despite its simplicity, the meal was incredibly satisfying. The flavors were delicious, and the in-house smoked pork added an authentic touch to the experience.
Aside from being a dining establishment, the place also hosts a couple of Airbnb rooms as well. It would definitely be a great place to recharge before heading back to the city. Perhaps next time I would be back as the village itself has many other Airbnb scattered across the area.
In addition to being a dining establishment, the place also offers a few Airbnb rooms. It would undoubtedly be a wonderful spot to recharge before heading back to the city. Perhaps next time, I would stay in this village, since they are many other Airbnb options, each promising a unique and peaceful retreat.

In conclusion, both Lao Chai Village and Ta Van Village offer an authentic glimpse into rural life, untouched by the hustle and bustle of modernity. Exploring these villages is not just a journey but an immersive experience in a way of life that cherishes tradition, community, and a profound connection to nature. Whether drawn by the breathtaking landscapes or the rich cultural heritage, I left with a deep appreciation and a hope to return again in the future.
