Desa Cattle Dairy Farm: Switzerland of Malaysia in Kundasang

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm (Ladang Tenusu Desa Cattle) immediately made it onto my bucket list when we planned our trip to Kundasang. It is one of the area’s popular attractions, with social media users often referring to it as the “Switzerland of Malaysia”. Naturally, I had to see the famous scenery for myself!

We rented a car in the morning, and my friend drove us from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang. The journey took over 2.5 hours, and it was not exactly the smoothest ride. The roads were winding, traffic was quite heavy at certain stretches, and slower-moving heavy vehicles occasionally held us up along the way.

Despite the long drive, I was looking forward to visiting Desa Cattle Dairy Farm and other attractions in Kundasang.

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Upon arrival, I was glad to step out of the car and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Although the weather was still warm, the mountain air felt slightly cooler than in Kota Kinabalu.

And there it was — the picturesque landscape that had earned Kundasang its nickname as the “Switzerland of Malaysia”. Vast green pastures stretched across the farm, with cows grazing in the fields. Rows of trees lined the foothills, with majestic mountains forming a stunning backdrop.

The scenery was beautiful, and I could understand why this place had become such a popular photo spot. The mountain backdrop and open grasslands made for a refreshing change from the city landscape.

Exploring the Farm

After purchasing our vehicle entrance ticket, we made our way into the farm. A large crowd had gathered near the entrance, with many visitors queuing for Desa Gelato. Desa Gelato comes in three flavours: Original, Matcha and Chocolate. I decided to try the Matcha flavour, although I found myself wishing I had gone with the Original instead.

Besides gelato, the farm also sells locally produced dairy products, including milk, cheese and yoghurt. Since we had travelled all the way to Kundasang, I picked up a bottle of chocolate milk to try as well. The dairy products make for a nice little treat before exploring the farm, especially if you enjoy dairy products!

Watching the Cow-Milking Process

Inside the building, we found a room beside the souvenir shop where visitors could observe cows being milked using machines. It was an interesting glimpse into the farm’s dairy production process. It was also a chance to learn a little more about how the milk is produced.

Another outdoor activity was feeding the cows with milk purchased from the farm. This could be a fun experience for visitors who want to interact with the animals up close.

Photos Opportunity Against the Mountain Scenery

Of course, no visit to Desa Cattle Dairy Farm would be complete without taking photos of the surrounding landscape. There are also photo spots such as a tractor and cow sculptures for you to take photos with as well. After spending some time outdoors capturing the beautiful views, we moved on to our next destination.

The beautiful mountain backdrop and sprawling green pastures were the main highlights of our visit. Now that I have finally visited this popular attraction, I can see why so many travellers have nicknamed it the “Switzerland of Malaysia”

*(Kundasang is commonly called the “Switzerland of Malaysia,” and Desa Cattle Dairy Farm is one of the main attractions associated with this nickname because of its green pastures, grazing cows and mountain views.)
