Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum: A Glimpse into Melaka’s Rich Peranakan Heritage

The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum was one of the first museums I visited upon arriving in Melaka. Conveniently nestled in the heart of the city centre, it stands as a testament to Melaka’s rich Peranakan heritage. Like the museums I visited in Penang (Pinang Peranakan Mansion and George Town Mansion), it features a unique blend of Chinese and Malay cultures.

The museum occupies a restored two-story house that combines three terrace lots. It was once the home of Baba Chan Cheng Siew (1865-1919), a Peranakan gentleman and planter. Four generations of the same family lived in this home before Cheng Siew’s eldest grandson, Chan Kim Lay, transformed it into a museum in 1985.

Exploring the Museum

Upon entering, I paid an entrance fee of RM25, and the staff kindly explained the history of the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum. The museum curators have thoughtfully divided it into several sections, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Peranakan.

With my camera-attached tripod in hand, I started to explore, looking out for the perfect IG-worthy spots. In fact, every corner of the museum provides a unique backdrop, making it a haven for photography enthusiasts. The fusion of Chinese, Malay, and colonial influences is evident in the intricate designs, vibrant colors, and antique furnishings -ensuring visitors can capture memorable moments throughout their visit.

If you’re planning to dress in a kebaya, sarong, or any other costume, note that a RM100 fee will be charged. This fee also covers your museum entry.

Overall, the museum offers an immersive glimpse into Peranakan life, highlighting their history, traditions, and opulent lifestyle. It would be more fun to gather more friends to visit the museum together. At the same time, you will also gain some valuable historical insights!
