Kundasang Travel Guide: 9 Places to Visit and Things to Do

Kundasang is a charming destination in Sabah, Malaysia. Besides Mount Kinabalu, it is also known for its cool mountain scenery and rolling green hills. Located around a 2.5-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu, it is often referred to as the ”Switzerland of Malaysia” for its picturesque landscapes.

There are plenty of places to explore in Kundasang, from a dairy farm with mountain views to scenic hilltops, strawberry farms and relaxing hot springs. Whether you enjoy nature, photography or simply escaping the city, Kundasang has something to offer.

My friend and I visited Kundasang on a day trip from Kota Kinabalu. Due to time constraints, we could not cover every attraction on our list, but we managed to visit the top three places featured in this guide. If you would like to explore more of Kundasang’s attractions at a leisurely pace, I would recommend spending at least one night at a resort or Airbnb in the area.

Here is my Kundasang Travel Guide to the top places to visit and things to do in Kundasang:

1. Desa Cattle Dairy Farm (Ladang Tenusu Desa Cattle)

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm was automatically added to my bucket list when we planned our trip to Kundasang. Famous for its green pastures and stunning views, this dairy farm is one of the area’s most popular attractions. After visiting the place myself, it would indeed remind many visitors of the countryside in Switzerland.

Besides enjoying the scenery and taking photos, visitors can purchase fresh dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and ice cream from the farm’s shop. Another activity available is feeding the cows with milk purchased on-site.

Although the weather was still warm during our visit, the temperature felt slightly cooler than in Kota Kinabalu. We enjoyed taking in the beautiful surroundings and admiring the rows of trees against the mountains in the background.

2. Sosodikon Hill Kundasang

Sosodikon Hill is another popular attraction for visitors looking to enjoy panoramic views of Kundasang’s highlands. The hill is known for its distinctive conical shape and scenic surroundings. Getting to the viewpoint involves a short uphill hike. It is a good option for those who want to enjoy the scenery without committing to a long trekking route.

Once you reach the top, you can take in the surrounding hills, green landscapes and views of Mount Kinabalu. The open scenery also makes it a great spot for photography. I was fortunate that the weather is generally cool and the skies are clear that day. Do admire the beautiful flowers along the way up too.

3. Mount Kinabalu Park

Nature lovers should make time for Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects the rich biodiversity surrounding Mount Kinabalu. The park is home to a wide variety of plant species, including orchids, pitcher plants and other unique highland flora. There are many nature trails and route where visitors can choose to explore and learn about the local ecosystem.

Since I was not planning to climb Mount Kinabalu, the park offers an opportunity to appreciate the mountain’s natural beauty. If you enjoy hiking, photography or spending time in nature, Kinabalu Park is worth adding to your Kundasang itinerary.

4. Alpaca Club

Animal lovers may want to drop by Alpaca Club, where visitors can get up close to alpacas and enjoy an interactive animal experience. Depending on the activities available during your visit, you may be able to feed the alpacas and take photos with them.

The attraction also provides a fun environment for families with young children, and I am sure there will get all excited to interact with animals.

5. Bombon Kg. Marakau (Fish Spa) / Sg. Moroli Fish Spa

For a different kind of experience, consider visiting Bombon Kg. Marakau or Sungai Moroli Fish Spa in Sabah.

These community-based fish spa experiences allow visitors to dip their feet into the river while medium fish swim around. The sensation can feel ticklish as the fish nibble gently at your feet. Unlike a conventional spa, the experience takes place in a natural river environment.

It could be a fun addition to your itinerary. However, remember to follow local guidelines and avoid entering the water if you have open wounds.

6. Hooga Cafe

A trip to Kundasang would not be complete without stopping for a meal or coffee while enjoying the mountain scenery. Hooga Cafe is one of the places you can consider adding to your food itinerary. It offers a chance to take a break from sightseeing, recharge with a drink and enjoy a more relaxed side of Kundasang.

7. Poring Hot Spring

Located in the Ranau area, Poring Hot Spring is a popular stop for visitors exploring the wider Kundasang region. The attraction is known for its natural hot spring pools, where visitors can soak in warm mineral water and relax after a day of sightseeing. There are also nature trails and other outdoor attractions within the surrounding area.

However, Poring Hot Spring is farther from central Kundasang than some of the other attractions on this list. If you are planning a day trip from Kota Kinabalu, allow enough time for the drive and activities.

8. Kundasang War Memorial

The Kundasang War Memorial is a historical attraction dedicated to the Australian and British prisoners of war who died during the Sandakan Death Marches in World War II, as well as the local people who helped them.

Beyond its gardens, the memorial offers an opportunity to learn about an important part of Sabah’s history. It provides a meaningful contrast to Kundasang’s scenic attractions and is worth visiting if you are interested in history.

9. Mesilou Highland Strawberry Farm

If you enjoy strawberries, consider adding Mesilou Highland Strawberry Farm to your itinerary. The farm is located in the highlands of Kundasang, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about strawberry cultivation in the cooler mountain climate. Depending on the season and arrangements, you may also be able to pick or purchase fresh strawberries and strawberry-based products.

Do check whether strawberry picking is available before visiting, as fruit availability can vary depending on the season.

Kundasang Travel Guide: Final Thoughts

Kundasang is a wonderful destination for anyone who enjoys mountain scenery, nature and a slower pace of travel. From the picturesque landscapes of Desa Cattle Dairy Farm and Sosodikon Hill to the natural beauty of Kinabalu Park, there are plenty of attractions to explore.

Although my friend and I only managed to visit three of the places on this list during our day trip from Kota Kinabalu, there is certainly enough to keep visitors occupied for a longer stay. If you are planning your own trip, I would recommend prioritising the attractions that interest you most. Staying overnight in Kundasang is also a good idea if you want to explore more places without rushing through your itinerary.

So do Kundasang deserves a spot on your Sabah travel itinerary? I hope my Kundasang Travel Guide would be useful for those planning a trip to visit Kundasang. Be sure to check out my other travel guides for more travel inspiration.
