Dark Mansion Penang is the first and only glow-in-the-dark museum in Malaysia.
Situated at the center of George Town, Penang, the Dark Mansion is an interactive museum to visit. The concept is somehow similar to trick eye museums where people pose against exciting backdrops. What differentiates the Dark Mansion would be the integration of glow in the dark effect into these paintings/backdrops.
I was apparently around the area after having breakfast at the famous Pitt Street Koay Teow Soup. After paying an entrance fee of 40RM, I proceed in as I got my camera ready. As I walked up a flight of stairs, the first corridor features the tropical pandora. The walls, leaves and flowers were neon and glowing, reminding me of the movie “Avatar”. Thankfully I was the first visitor that day as it starts operation at 10.30am. It was such a privilege being the early-bird visitor and not worry about getting photobombed.
The thing about such interactive museums would be best to go with friends. It felt odd placing my tripod and taking solo photos throughout the journey. I was glad that the staff helped me to take some photos as well.
Fire & Water: Tribute to Darwin
One of the highlights would be the “Fire & Water: Tribute to Darwin” art, painted by Edgar Mueller who grew up in Germany. He has devoted himself completely to street paintings. After being inspired by 3D illusion paintings, he pursues the new art form, creating his own style. As you can see below, the same waterfall undergoes a transition as the lights goes off.
The place was small and probably anyone could have covered all the photo spots in about half an hour. It would be best if your photography devices have excellent night mode function to capture in the dark. This museum would be more recommended for families with young children as they would enjoy the experience much more.
