7 Popular Cathedrals in Germany and France

There are countless popular cathedrals across Europe (Germany and France) as the continent was steeped in religious history. I had my opportunity to visit some of these places of worship, which I have included to my travel itinerary from Germany to France. Even though you might not be a Christ believer, the doors are always open to welcome tourists alike.

The following gothic cathedrals are not listed according to any order and each of them are considered well known with a rich history to share. Let me know which have you visited?

1) Sainte-Chapelle

What really captivates anyone who enters Sainte-Chapelle would definitely be the stained glass. After ascending to the second floor via a narrow stairways, my eyes were immediately dazzled by the stunning 1113 stained glass arranged across 15 windows!

Being one of the most popular cathedrals, the place was so stunning that everyone marveled in awe before starting to get trigger happy snapping photos and videos!

2) Strasbourg Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg was probably the only cathedral which we had to queue for about 45 mins in order to climb up to the almost-top at a fee. It literally was breathe-taking, both the amazing view as well as the few storeys climb up the narrow steps. Known up until the 19th century, it was considered the highest building in the Christian world. We get to admire an unobstructed view over the city!

Do remember to head into the cathedral by the main entrance once more to explore the ground level.

3) Cologne Cathedral

Cologne Cathedral is one of Germany’s most visited landmarks and is a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also conveniently located in the city where are plenty of shopping to be done. The Cathedral was so high that I did not manage to fit the entire structure into my photos based on my location in front of it.

4) Frankfurt Cathedral

Despite begin a short half a day at Frankfurt, I did manage to visit Frankfurt Cathedral that was located at the centre city of Frankfurt am Main. It was dedicated to St Bartholomew and it has striking reddish walls with 300 over steps tower for people to climb.

5) St Martin’s Church

My visit to St Martin’s Church rather brief since Colmar was a lively town with stretches of Christmas Markets going on and many alleys awaiting me to explore. It is still considered an important building in the city of Colmar although it could not be compared to other bigger well known Cathedrals out there.

6) Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris

I was quite intrigued by the dome top of this religious monument despite it being a Roman Catholic Church as it did remind me of other religion’s architecture. It was the only site I had visited at night since it was just about 20 minutes’ walk from the apartment I was lodging at.

Being located on top of the hill of Montmartre and being the second highest point of the city, expect some climbing to get there. Check out the crowd outside the church even at night!

7) Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral

Notre-Dame is one of Paris most iconic landmark. However, I could only view from beyond its shutters as it was badly damaged by flames. Millions of dollars have already been raised for its restoration and would probably be up in 5 years’ time.
