Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town, Penang

Pinang Peranakan Mansion is a heritage museum.

One of the first few destinations I visited after checking into 23 Lovelane Penang Hotel would be the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. It is a bright green building that was easy to spot from a distance as I walked along Church Street.

The mansion depicts the typical home of a rich Baba of more than a century ago. It offers a glimpse of the customs and traditions of the opulent lifestyle of these locally acculturated Chinese. The moment I stepped into the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, I was in awe. This century old stately mansion also showcases eclectic design and architecture which preserves history.

After paying the entrance fee of 25RM, the staffs informed me that there are guided tours available. There are different time slots for both english and mandarin guided tours. As I would like to explore the place at my own pace, I did not opt for the tour. The compound also consisted of The Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum, Chung Keng Kwee Ancestral Temple & The Nyonya Kitchen.

The place was in fact bigger than I expected it to be as I wandered from room to room. There was even a couple taking a wedding photoshoot around the beautifully furnished Chinese banquet table. It seems like that place has many elements of red and gold which portrays the status of rich Baba.

There are 2 floors in the building, and one has to take off their shoes before they could proceed upstairs. Each of the rooms features many more ornaments and antique furniture which many would have never come across. I could see that the Peranakans spared no expense into furnishing, as even a bridal chamber was being featured.

There is also a souvenir shop behind the Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum that retails various knick knacks to take home. I believe most would spend more time within the Pinang Peranakan Mansion as to other compound. Definitely a tourist hotspot with various photo worthy backgrounds!
