Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple & Zen Gardens in Ipoh

Kek Lok Tong is One of the Best Cave Temple to Visit in Ipoh

Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple & Zen Gardens was one of the many highlights of my trip to Ipoh. It was on my priority list as the place offers a captivating journey into a realm of natural beauty and spiritual serenity.

Right after having breakfast and leaving our luggage over at M Boutique Hotel, we took a grab over. Kek Lok Cave means Cave of Great Happiness and is about 100m in length, divided onto 3 main chambers. After World War 2, the place was used for iron ore mining operations. Its operations were ceased, and the doline was landscaped into a recreational park with a place of worship.

It was exciting to be visiting a place nestled amidst limestone hills and verdant surroundings. The grand entrance of the cave greeted us as we approach. We found ourselves immediately immersed in a serene atmosphere. The main attraction of Kek Lok Tong is the expansive limestone cave that houses the temple. The caves exhibit various forms of stalactites, layered ponds, draperies and stalagmites, are all nature’s masterpiece.

We made our way to the central altar where they are various Buddhist deities. The burning incense permeates the air, adding to the spiritual ambiance. Feel free to offer a prayer, respecting the religious customs and practices of the temple.

Scenic Garden

As I walk towards the rear end of the cave temple, a view out-of-this-world greeted my eyes. A flight of steps led down, leading me to a scenic garden with a large pond.

Along the pathway, there were stone statues of the 18 Lohans (Arhats), based on Buddhism. They are followers of the Buddha who have followed the Eightfold Path and attained the spiritual enlightenment.

Aside from the pond where I caught sight of turtles and fishes, there was a pebbles rock path. Visitors could walk barefoot on it as this practice works as a kind of reflexology to improve wellness. Head over to the rental booths to rent the sheltered twin-bicycle or the paddle boat ride for a fun time with family or friends.

In conclusion, Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple is a place of religious significance and also a testament to the wonders of nature. It offers a respite from the bustling city life and provides a sanctuary for self-reflection, spirituality, and appreciating the beauty of the natural world.
