The Gem Museum – Singapore’s First Private Gemstone Museum

The Gem Museum’s official reopening on 4 June 2022 at Perak Road.

Husband-and-wife team Tay Kunming and Loke Huiying set up The Gem Museum on Queen Street in 2015. They then moved to Kandahar Street before settling at its current location at Perak Road.

It was conveniently located near Rochor MRT as I made my way over to the 3-story newly revamped shophouse. In conjunction with its reopening, The Gem Museum will be presenting “A Night at The Gem Museum”. UV/LED torches will be loaned to visitors for exploring the mysterious luminescent minerals and gemstones as the lights were dimmed.

The Gem Museum comprises The King’s Bespoke, Far East Gemological Institute, and Far East Gem Lab. Moving into this new premise allows the consolidation of the family’s various ventures under the same roof.

The King’s Bespoke is located on the 3rd floor, offering bespoke services for fine jewelry. The second floor is where Far East Gem Lab and a classroom setting for workshops and lessons to take place. The main exhibition space would be on the ground floor where participants learn about the concept of ‘mine to market’.

I have always been keen to understand gemstones and minerals myself and I was quite excited to see many varieties on display. For those who love to take pictures, there are 2 great picture-worthy spots! The first would be the amethyst wings from Brazil, easily spotted as you step into The Gem Museum. Next, head towards the foot of the stairs where the ring of crystal is located at for a sparkling crystal framing.

The Gem Museum is a place for visitors to explore and understand more about the trade, gemstone’s value, quality, and authenticity. Do check them out as admission is free!

“A Night at The Gem Museum” is held only in the month of June 2022, only on Friday nights.
